Have you recently read an epic travelogue that you just couldn’t put down? Immersed yourself in a story about an adventure so fascinating that it inspired your next trip? Give your favourite travel title the recognition it deserves by nominating it for a prestigious award.

Stanfords, the UK’s leading retailer for travel books and specialist maps, is now accepting nominations for the 2025 Edward Stanford Travel Writing Awards – this year sponsored by cruise travel operator Viking. Honouring excellence in travel writing, previous winners have included renowned names such as Bill Bryson, Michael Palin, Jan Morris, Colin Thubron, Paul Theroux and Dervla Murphy.

Chairman and Chief Executive of Stanfords, Vivien Godfrey, said: “Here at Stanfords we are famous for showing people the world from the comfort of their armchairs.  We really rely on travel writers to help keep us informed about the world through their writing.

“This year has been a fantastic year for travel writing and we can’t wait to see what books are put forward to be shortlisted.”

About the award categories

The Edward Stanford Travel Book of the Year category can include any form of literary travel writing including prose, food, illustrated, and photography. Last year’s winner was Ghaith Abdul-Ahad’s A Stranger in Your Own City: Travels in the Middle Easts’s Long War, a poignant portrait of Baghdad, Iraq, through its decades of conflict.

The three other categories include the Viking Award for Fiction with a Sense of Place, Children’s Travel Book of the Year, and the Bradt New Travel Writer of the Year – the latter only accepting nominations for unpublished travel writers.

Eligible books must be published for the first time between 1 November 2023 and 31 October 2024. The deadline for nominations is 4 November, with the Bradt New Travel Writer of the Year Award extended to the 15 November.
