50th anniversary of historic Zaire River Expedition celebrated 50th anniversary of historic Zaire River Expedition celebrated
The Scientific Exploration Society (SES) is marking the 50th anniversary of a pioneering British expedition that navigated the perilous 4,700km Zaire River – now known as the Congo River – through some of the world’s most treacherous rapids. The large-scale expedition, which took place in 1974, was not only a remarkable feat of navigation but also an important scientific undertaking, contributing research on ‘River Blindness’ (onchocerciasis) and a range of other medical and environmental studies.
Led by Colonel John Blashford-Snell, the expedition involved over 160 individuals, including servicemen, scientists and medical experts from ten countries. It was one of the largest British expeditions ever assembled and was supported by an array of organisations, including the Armed Forces, the Natural History Museum, and the SES.

The groundbreaking journey used innovative technology, with giant inflatable boats and jet boats specially designed for the expedition, including newly produced New Zealand Hamilton Jet Boats, secured with the assistance of the late Prince Philip. These boats proved crucial for navigating the river’s formidable cataracts. Despite the immense challenges faced during the journey, no lives were lost.
The expedition also honoured the centenary of Sir Henry Morton Stanley’s famous 999-day crossing of Africa, further cementing its place in the exploration history books.
In addition to its scientific objectives, the expedition inspired books and television documentaries, with Richard Snailham writing the official history, A Giant Amongst Rivers, detailing the adventure for the SES.

Following the successful completion of the mission, Blashford-Snell and the team were awarded the prestigious Segrave Trophy by the RAC.
The anniversary of the expedition is being celebrated with a special lecture at the Royal Geographical Society, with funds being raised to support future generations of explorers. Colonel John Blashford-Snell will be one of the evening’s speakers.
The SES commemorates this milestone not only as a testament to human endurance and ingenuity but also as a call to continue exploring and protecting the world’s most remote and vital regions.
