5 things to do in Porto Santo, Madeira
With its long sandy beach, turquoise waters, rich historical heritage and dramatic, desert-esque geology, this is easily one of Europe’s best-kept secrets…

Porto Santo may only be a short ferry ride from main island Madeira, but this tiny isle feels far-flung. And with its nine kilometre sandy beach, turquoise waters, rich historical heritage and dramatic, desert-esque geology, it’s easily one of Europe’s best-kept secrets. You’ll find this golden gem in the continent’s extreme southwest, 500km off the coast of Africa and 1,000km from mainland Europe. Fly from Lisbon in just 1.5 hours or take the ferry from Madeira in 2.5 hours, and your adventure begins…
1: Enjoy the pristine coastline

A place to relax, to glimpse why this island is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, to uncover its 14 million years of geological prowess… It’s easy to sing the praises of Porto Santo’s coast, especially its vast swath of towel-worthy sand. Voted “Europe’s Leading Beach Destination” at the World Travel Awards 2024, it’s flanked by blissfully calm waters – perfect for activities beyond the beach. Experience the tranquillity of the sea and discover hidden caves and inlets from a paddle board to start; ‘SUPing’ is a great way to connect with the water and discover Porto Santo’s volcanic peaks – rising from the east and west. Or, if you prefer a sturdier vessel, boat trips will show you the island’s unique topography, or even take you around the whole archipelago. Dolphins and whales – specifically sperm, pilot and humpbacks – can be spotted year-round here too, peaking April to September.
2: Dive beneath the surface

The crystalline waters surrounding Porto Santo make it the perfect spot to get under the waves. Indeed, it’s renowned as one of the best places in Europe for diving, its exceptional visibility making it possible to see clearly down to a depth of around 40 metres. Those seeking marine life should keep their eyes peeled for some of 550 fish species, such as groupers, greater amberjacks and barred hogfish, and – if you’re lucky – you might even spot a rare loggerhead turtle. If you’re more of a wreck diver, two purposely sunk ships make for excellent artificial reefs. ‘Madeirense’ – a 70-metre cargo ship – was sunk in 2000, while Portuguese naval vessel ‘Corveta General Pereira d’Eça’ was sunk a mile off Porto Santo Harbour in 2016. Both now attract a variety of aquafauna, clad in barnacles and corals alike to make for compelling marine adventures at depths of up to 35 metres.
3: Go horseriding

Porto Santo’s mesmerising landscapes and biodiversity are what put it on the UNESCO map back in 2020. And what better way to discover its rugged terrain – and the treasures hidden within – than on horseback? Whether you’re a novice or an experienced rider, this is the ideal opportunity to combine an animal encounter with some unbridled exploration of a designated Biosphere Reserve. Not sure how to kick-start your horseriding experience? Private services are available across the island, as well as dedicated facilities like the Porto Santo Equestrian Centre, which offers lessons for all ages and levels in its open-air riding arena.
4: Take a hike

If you love to start your day with a stroll, the beaches here are tough to beat. But if you prefer treks with a bit more gusto (and a lot more sweat), Porto Santo’s peaks won’t disappoint. Begin with Vereda do Pico do Castelo. There are two options here: one is a 3.2km route (1.5 hours approx.) and the other stretches for 4.6km, the longest trail on the island. Perhaps it’s the island’s tallest mountain – Pico do Facho – that beckons next. While there’s no direct route to the summit (518m), there’s a rough trail that will take you around the surrounding peaks for epic views of this behemoth. And don’t miss Pico de Ana Ferreira – with its dinosaur-like spine of spiky rocks, ‘Organ Pipes’ rock formation, and fascinating network of caves.
5: Enjoy wellness experiences

Porto Santo has all the ingredients for an R&R getaway. Think warm, fine sands, turquoise waters, and plentiful spas. Even the sands have proven therapeutic properties, often used in sand baths to treat diseases like arthritis, gout, osteoporosis and fibromyalgia, as well to reduce pain and inflammation. Pair that with the high mineral and iodine content of the surrounding Atlantic Ocean itself – so perfectly balanced it’s said to help combat stress and fatigue – and a holiday here promises a truly revitalising and invigorating experience for the body, mind and soul… Although, perhaps that’s just the effect of spending time on this paradisical isle. Whatever the reason, there’s no denying the healing power of a stay on Porto Santo.
